Stroke

Our stroke rehabilitation program is designed to maximize outcomes for individuals who have suffered a stroke. We provide specialized medical management, nursing and therapy services in a hospital setting. Individual therapy, group treatment and community outings address functional abilities.

The intent of the DHR Health Stroke Rehab Program is to provide intensive and comprehensive services designed to prevent or minimize chronic disabilities of persons with a primary diagnosis of stroke. The program aims to restore the person to optimal levels of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional functioning with the context of the person, family, and community.

But the care doesn’t stop there. We then provide our Stroke Rehab program to the person served and family through our continuum from inpatient rehabilitation through post-acute outpatient rehabilitation care. Additionally, Stroke Support Groups, counseling, education and individualized training also prepare families and caregivers for care after leaving the hospital.

Amputation

Our amputee rehabilitation program prepares patients and their families to cope physically and psychologically with the traumatic or surgical loss of a limb, or a congenital limb deficiency. The rehabilitation process begins postoperatively with a pre-prosthetic program that focuses on preparing the limb for a possible prosthesis. The goals of this phase of rehabilitation are (1) wound and pain management, (2) proper positioning and prevention of contractures, (3) building strength and endurance, and (4) learning the skills necessary to achieve maximum independence without a prosthesis.

The DHR Health Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the region’s only rehabilitation hospitals to offer treatment equipment such as the body weight support treadmill via Lite Gait, and NuStep Steppers to help individuals with limb loss regain motor strength and control. The Rehabilitation program at DHR Health is comprised of specialized highly trained professionals that work as an interdisciplinary team to help restore persons with an amputation to their highest potential.

Brain Injury

We provide rehabilitation to individuals with brain injuries of all severity levels. We treat patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), non-traumatic brain injury, as well as brain injuries combined with spinal cord injury or multiple fractures and amputations. Patients benefit from a highly integrated and intense rehabilitation program that is tailored to their unique physical/functional limitations, cognitive impairments, and behavioral issues. Our patients travel from surrounding communities to undergo the aggressive brand of rehabilitation that can’t be found anywhere else in our area.

Community Integration

Our rehabilitation programs and support services all have one goal in mind: getting you back to the life you love. Each of our programs focus on community reintegration, social interaction, and family involvement prior to leaving our facility. To do this, we involve patients in various group activities and community outings, such as arts and crafts class and dining at a restaurant. By providing patients with the skills needed to reintegrate into the community, we improve rehabilitation outcomes and recovery success.

Major Multiple Trauma

Trauma is a serious injury to the body. It is caused by a physical force, such as violence or an accident. The injury may be complicated by psychiatric, behavioral, and social factors. This can cause the disability to be greater than just physical injuries.

We offer a highly individualized and holistic approach in the rehabilitation of Major Multiple Traumas. Our goal is to return the patient to their highest level of physical, social, and emotional function. Patients and their families are essential members of the rehabilitation team and we encourage their active involvement throughout the rehabilitation process.

Neurologic Music Therapy

DHR Health Rehabilitation Hospital is home to the only Certified Neurologic Music Therapist in the region. Music therapy can help foster recovery from complications in patients suffering from a stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological diseases. Combining music and standard rehabilitation therapies can improve patient compliance and make therapy more enjoyable. There is evidence that incorporating music into a rehabilitation program fosters recovery of hand function, dexterity, spatial movement, cognitive function, mood, coordination, and memory.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Orthopedic Rehabilitation, or orthopedic therapy, helps people develop, restore, and maintain movement and functional ability. We use manual therapy, exercise therapy, and movement and postural training, to achieve the highest level of function.

Pet Therapy

For people with brain injuries, pet therapy (animal-assisted therapy) can play an important role in recovery. Physically, dogs can inspire sedentary patients to move and brushing a pet can help improve motor skills. Cognitively, pet therapy helps build brain skills of focus and screening out distractions. Furry friends are also proven to help lower blood pressure, reduce awareness of pain, and help promote the release of endorphins that create feelings of peace and contentment.

After surgery, people experience pain, swelling, loss of motion, and loss of strength. Our rehabilitation program guides people through the healing process, through a customized program designed to meet each person's needs and goals. A patient’s ability to regain motion, strength and ultimately return to their daily activities depends on physical therapy. The body will not regain normal motion without specific retraining. The physical therapists are specifically trained to restore range of motion and strength without compensation and to prevent re-injury during the recovery process. The therapist can also provide the patient with specific guidelines to allow optimal healing.

Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury is a devastating event, both physically and psychologically. In addition to possible paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury, a spinal cord injury also impacts many different bodily functions, including circulation, metabolism, temperature regulation, nutritional health, skin, respiration, bowel and bladder elimination, and sexuality. The complexity of spinal cord injuries requires highly specialized skills of a healthcare team trained to manage this kind of injury.

The DHR Health Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program is a person-centered program that utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach to address the unique rehabilitation needs of persons who have been diagnosed with spinal cord dysfunction. We treat both traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord dysfunction using evidence-based practices to deliver services that address the preventive, restorative, supportive, and lifelong rehabilitation needs of the persons served. The interdisciplinary team focuses on the personal preferences, strengths, and needs of the persons served as well as their families/support systems.
